WHAT I DO
I help organizations structure, format, and present online information, to better inform and engage. I also have extensive experience in events management.
I work for Children’s Health Defense, helping the CHD team do the important work of protecting children (that’s all of us!) from the dangers of environmental toxins and the poor policies which enable toxic exposures to continue.
For more than 36 years, I worked for my alma mater, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). My last day of work for the university was October 15, 2021, because I chose not to be injected against COVID-19, rather than comply with the school’s vaccine mandate which required my participation even though I had been working fully remotely, almost 500 miles away, for more than four years. Because I chose to make my own medical decision, I am now prevented from working for Caltech ever again as a staff member. Rather than be terminated, I chose to retire from the university.
From 2012 to 2021, serving as Digital Communications Manager in the Caltech Office of Strategic Communications, I helped manage content for the main university website and other websites, and helped others across campus do the same for their groups. I also served as the de facto manager of the university’s master calendar, and helped set up and manage our department’s internal and external communications tools, including Trello, Slack, Box, SharePoint, MailChimp, Wufoo, Bit.ly, and more.
From 2010 to 2012, I served as Associate Director for Communications in the Caltech Alumni Association. In that role, I managed electronic communications with the university’s more than 20,000 alumni, including setting up and managing the Association’s use of an email marketing system, coordinating event communications and activities, and helping in the production of print pieces.
From 1985 to 2009, I worked in Caltech’s Office of Public Events. For most of that time, I served as Audience Services Manager, overseeing all aspects of our interactions with guests in a 1200-seat auditorium and smaller facilities, including preparation for all events, reservations and ticket sales, concessions sales, and staffing non-technical event positions. In those 24 years, I helped coordinate more than 3,500 campus events, including two visits by sitting U.S. presidents, and I had the honor of directly supervising more than 1,000 other employees. In 1993, I created the initial website for the department, the first in the nation for a university public events group, and helped to manage all subsequent versions of that website through 2021.
In each of these roles, I assisted with effective process transformation, helping the work of others in the department and throughout the university move forward more easily.
I also volunteer with several organizations that matter to me.
